IMPARTER Phase 1

Health literacy and numeracy skills in the general populations worldwide are poor and directly limit patient understanding during interviews. The previous BCRF funded 'TARGET' educational workshops revealed that many oncologists have difficulty discussing Gene Expression Profiling (GEP) test scores, risks of recurrence following different treatments and whether chemotherapy is likely to be beneficial. This is especially true when patients are risk averse or very anxious.

Many clinical teams give patients information leaflets explaining GEP testing but these are often complex and therefore not always helpful. SHORE-C designed two short 8 minute, patient-friendly, information films (PIF). They are conversational in style and share a generic introduction incorporating simple explanatory graphics.

Following this introduction one film focuses on the Oncotype DX test and the other film the Prosigna test.

Prior to using the film with patients, the team conducted a research study to compare the initial effectiveness of the PIF in terms of improving knowledge and comprehension about genomic profiling tests, and measured individuals' preferences. Participants were women from the lay public aged from 45 to 75 years.
