Advances in breast cancer research have led to more accurate tests and treatments that are tailored to an individual patient. However, explaining why certain treatments are recommended can be challenging, especially when patients are feeling anxious or overwhelmed.
Understanding why a treatment may or may not work often requires discussion of complex scientific ideas, which can be confusing for patients trying to make informed decisions about their care. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) may also find it difficult to explain these concepts in simple, non-technical language.
This project aims to improve communication between HCPs and patients about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. We will work with experts to create metaphors and analogies, that may help complex information easier to understand.
Our primary research question is: - can we optimise HCPs' communication when conveying information about complex areas of breast cancer management?
This project aims to make conversations about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment clearer, more meaningful, and easier to understand. We believe that using everyday examples, analogies, and metaphors can help explain complex medical information in ways that make sense to patients and their families.
Working with HCPs and patient advocates, we will:
