Professors Fallowfield and Jenkins recently attended the two-day Summer School at Sussex, for the Independent Cancer Patients' Voice, which was funded by ComSkills. They presented on the topic "The Robot Will See You Now," discussing technological advances in communication within healthcare. Research Fellow Rachel Starkings also participated, presenting on "Bodyswaps," a virtual learning tool designed to help navigate difficult conversations. Additionally, Dr. Val Shilling gave a presentation on "How Patients Have Helped Shape and Implement Patient-Reported Outcome Measures."

New Article for TRUSTING Published

Professor Valerie Jenkins and colleagues, have published a new article titled 'Roll-out of an educational workshop to improve knowledge and self-confidence of healthcare professionals engaged in mainstreaming of breast cancer genetics'. The paper focuses on improving health care professionals' knowledge, communication and self confidence in breast cancer genetics through the use of TRUSTING (Talking about Risk & uncertainties of Testing in Genetics) educational materials, delivered by skilled facilitators in small group workshops. Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield and Dr. Val Shilling recently attended the Secondary Breast Cancer Summit in Liverpool, the UK's first national patient-focused conference on metastatic breast cancer. Professor Fallowfield presented 'They Just Don't Know What to Say or Do' based on the LIMBER study, a guide made for family and friends of those living with metastatic breast cancer.

Not only did she get married at the end of May, she also completed her postgraduate diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy, finding out last week that she has passed with a distinction! Last week the SHORE-C team attended the UK Oncology Forum in Brighton. Professor Val Jenkins gave a presentation on LIMBER - LIving with Metastatic Breast CanceER - survey results and outputs, including details of 2 information films produced for friends and family (They just don't know what to say or do) and healthcare professionals.
Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield chaired an interactive session on information exchanges between oncologists and their patients, drawing on the results of the LIMBER study.

Dr Val Shilling recently gave a talk at the Royal Society of Medicine where she presented early findings from a pilot study looking at the feasibility and acceptability of virtual learning in communication skills training. The pilot study looked specifically at the learning module 'Navigating Angry Conversations', a module developed by Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield with the RSM and BodySwaps. Professor Fallowfield at ESMO Berlin

Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield recently attended ESMO Breast Cancer Annual Congress in Berlin Germany. Professor Fallowfield gave a presentation as part of the Medscape Symposium entitled Living with HER2: Understanding the road to survivorship. The panel led symposium adopted a patient-centered approach in discussing therapeutic strategies for reducing the risk of disease recurrence and brain metastases in patients with HER2+ early breast cancer, the implications of real-world evidence for adjuvant therapy, how to implement optimal care pathways, and the need for diversity in clinical trials.

Professor Fallowfield is involved in the inquiry as an expert witness and contributed to the report which explored the communication and psychosocial implications for those affected.
