These DVDs comprise role-played scenarios about hypothetical expensive new cancer drugs that are not funded by the NHS. As well as the simulated case histories, there are introductions to each topic from Professor Dame Lesley Fallowfield, comments from clinicians and interviews from key opinion leaders and patients.
A sensitive balance needs to be struck between raising unrealistic hopes about the benefits that may be achieved and being honest about the costs, both financial, and in terms of side-effects. These conversations are often made more difficult by the inaccurate portrayal, especially in the popular press, of likely therapeutic gains.
